3月6日 Sugar, Sugar...Quite often I notice people commenting on how they wonder where I come up with some of the stuff I blog about. The answer is… I don’t know. The absolutely honest answer is… I don’t want to know. And if I did know… I probably wouldn’t share it with you because the next thing I know the padded wagon would be at the city limits and the two big burly guys in the white scrubs would have a Zman-sized straight jacket ready for usage… Soooo…
Rather than writing my usual blog I will try to outline where an idea came from and maybe you can figure out how my head works:
So I’m sitting here in the hotel thinking about a topic. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I get a lot of my topics from songs. I’m listening to some songs and I come across the one that’s playing now, Sugar Sugar. I have always liked this song. So I listen to it for awhile.
Suddenly I become aware of a HUGE craving I am having for a big ole bowl of cereal. This seems funny to me because I just ate a big Corporate dinner and was completely stuffed like a Christmas Turkey waiting for the little thingie to pop. And I’m not talking about the All-Bran-good-for-you-adult cereal… no I’m talking about the sticky sugary turn the milk six different kinds of colors and give you a sugar rush type of cereal from when I was a kid.
My first instinct was the craving was of course due to the “Sugar” in the song. But there’s more to it than that… something else… hmmm…
That’s it!! When I was a kid… this song, originally sung by the Archies, came on the back of a cereal box in the form of a 45 record that you could cut out and play.
Now I need to mention to those of you who are too young to have any idea what that last paragraph meant, just be quiet about that. Don’t comment on how you heard about 45’s but thought they were just some urban legend or how your great-great grandparents used to tell you stories about how the whole family would sit around and listen to records because they had no food on those cold nights in the mud shack out on the prairie. Some of us remember records very fondly and may even still have some in storage somewhere…
Back to the blog… You can only imagine the sound quality of a record that was cut out of the back of a cereal box… but it was MINE! And I would sit there and listen to it while eating the cereal it came with. I don’t remember what type of cereal but it was probably Cap’n Crunch which was one of my favorites. I can remember getting out the sugar container my Mom had made in a ceramics class (an odd shaped mushroom set that progressively went from a little one that we kept baking soda in to the biggest mushroom that was full of flour). As if the ole Cap’n wasn’t already loaded with enough sugar for me to be bouncing off the walls, I would put spoonful after spoonful of raw sugar on top of it! The goal of course was to get the entire end of your spoon full of that milky gelatinous sugary goodness with every bite. As the cereal started going away, you’d have to keep trying different sections of the bowl to make sure you had gotten it all.
After a nice wholesome breakfast such as this I would hit the door at 97.59 MPH and run and run and run all day around the neighborhood with my equally sugared up buddies, while the old man that lived behind us stood there leaning on his rake shaking his head saying, “Don’t have a clue where them boys gets all the energy from…”
Oh, one last thing, don’t think it was my parents fault either… that was before we knew that much sugar could kill a laboratory animal. You know… maybe the scientists should spend some of that research money on developing a stronger lab animal that didn’t die because of so many things then we could eat more fun foods again…
So that was my thinking this evening… Normally I could have turned this into a couple of different topics (three if you count the time I accidentally shot the old man behind us in the butt with my Red Ryder BB Gun… Hey, there was a bird on the bush… he was bent over behind it… I shot… the bird screamed… I said, “Hmmm… birds don’t usually scream, do they?”… then it dawned on me what had happened… I ran and ran and ran with my equally sugared up buddies…) but I thought if I just typed as the thoughts came, maybe you all could see how my head works.
Could it be because of all the sugar??
